Business Development Engineer, E-Powertrain

Purpose of Job

The Business Development Engineer (BDE) is responsible to enter new customers or new customer segments for our battery solutions of vehicle drivetrains.

He/She initiates new contacts, starts and implements first sales projects at high potential customers.

He/She visits customer’s design centers, Headquarters or other Decision-Making Units and establishes first relationships.

The responsibility of the BDE is to successfully establish first sales in a strategic area (e.g. E-Powertrain) with new customer contacts and to ensure roll-out.

This includes steering global projects, pricing and understanding customer needs.

Presence at customers: ~50%



Job Description

Main functions

1. New Customer Contacts
a. Based on digital lead generation, locally/regionally already existing customer relations, own searches and cold-calls the BDE will establish new contacts and relationships within his/her strategic area. This will be done in close cooperation with the local/regional sales force. Customer focus is not plant level but customer “Decision Making Units” such as Design Centers or Headquarters.

2. Customer Focus
a. The job holder establishes significant relationships with customers, partners, key-decision makers and other industry leaders e.g. associations, to promote products and services. The BDE thereby generates new CRM/CAS projects and brings those ideas and projects into the organization.

3. Product- and Technology-Development
a. For his/her projects the BDE evaluates – jointly with the technical functions – if existing products can fulfil the requirements or if new developments are needed. Together with the Market Segment Manager and the Application Solution Engineer he ensures that Product Developments are started based on customer needs. Specify products and achieve part approvals of tier parts at the OEM or the tier:

4. Project Steering
a. Depending on the local/regional sales force resource allocation to the accounts within the BDE’s strategic area, he/she will run and lead own CAS/CRM projects and support the development projects. In this role the GBDM also steers global pricing and product positioning. Business development and support local sales teams

5. Global BU Automotive Strategy
. The job holder is responsible for the development and implementation of the BU Automotive strategy for the defined focus field and to meet customers` needs.

6. Transfer from BDM to Account
a. Once first projects and sales have been established the GBDM transfers his/her responsibility into the regular sales force. If an account has significant growth potential and global scale (>5M€ PNS/cross regionally) this new account could become a Global Key Account; otherwise the regional sales organization via Sales Representatives or Regional Key Account Managers will take over the accounts and future projects. The GBDM will support the transfer of projects and relationships and continue to advise if needed for a limited timeframe.

7. KPI Responsibilities
a. Increase PNS per vehicle
b. Increase approvals per OEM/tier1
c. Increase CAS pipeline 


Hiring Requirements

Engineer /technical background.
Good English skills 

3+ year of relevant technical experience in automotive with customers contacts. 
a) Strong acquaintance to technical issues, good curiosity/ inventiveness.

Additional Skills

Despite this strong tech background, good understanding of customer “non-rational drivers”: = Good emotional intelligence to go below the surface. Good “technical story teller”. 

Self-confident and can make his point and advocate his opinions inside the organization: GKAM team, R&D, Marketing, countries. 

Active listener and excellent networker within the organization and customer organization. 

Excellent socialiser and team player 

High level of intercultural awareness 

Keep his self-control and analytical capabilities under pressure. 



Educational Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent

Experience Requirements
